DAYTON, OH – Riverside Research, a not-for-profit scientific research company primarily serving the US Department of Defense (DOD) and the Intelligence Community (IC), received a third place Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA) Journal Award for “Who’s in Control? Securing Commercial Unmanned Aerial Systems Command and Control – A Methodology and Way Ahead.”
Dr. Rusty Baldwin, Director of Cyber Research for Riverside Research, collaborated with Dr. Terry Hofecker of Demeter Inc. and Greg Carter of Electronic Warfare Associates to write the paper. The paper presented an overview of the commercial command and control security issues and a reasoned, deliberate approach to mitigating cybersecurity risks for commercial, unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in the National Air Space. The ATCA Publications Committee recognized the thorough research, thoughtful writing, and relevancy to the air traffic control industry from the paper.
“It is a great honor to receive this award from ATCA,” said Dr. Baldwin. “Identifying the security risks of unsecured commercial UAS is critical not only for public safety but for national security as well. It is vital that we ensure commercial UAS are secured against someone taking over or compromising their control systems.”
ATCA provides a forum in which those concerned can address the myriad issues inherent to the development of viable air traffic control systems and aviation infrastructures, and the ever increasing demands on the global navigable airspace environment.
